Nine Feathers

True Self-Defense Based on Natural Body Movement

Here's what some of our students say about Ninpo TaiJutsu and Sensei Alan Friedman:

Father and Daughter:
Approximately 15 months ago my daughter and I enrolled in Sensei Alan Friedman's self-defense class not knowing what to expect since neither my former Prom Princess daughter nor I had ever taken such a class.

Because of the true dedicated teaching and guidance of Sensei Friedman my daughter asks me to practice! It has given her self-confidence and as she says, "It's good for me. It makes me tough!"

As for me in my mid-fifties Alan has helped me develop tone, balance and I have become more limber. And of course I have learned many ways to oppose and end a physical attack.

Alan Friedman in truly inspirational. His enthusiasm, physical skill, mental dedication and warm sense of humor make the class work. He is amazing.

We intend to take the class for a long, long time.

On the art:

I’ve sampled or trained in several martial arts, and Ninpo is hands down the most exciting. It’s an amazingly well-rounded art that includes kicks, strikes, wrist techniques, throws, rolls, sword, staff, and powerful defenses for all of the above! And those are only the physical aspects of the art – add to that the great mental and spiritual training. As a woman in my mid-fifties, I believe this art will keep me young!

I really like Ninpo TaiJutsu. I took Tae Kwon Do but this is much more practical as a self-defense tool. Seems like it's got everything in there. I'm not just kicking and punching, but am learning how to use my entire body - from throwing others to doing wrist locks and bone breaking.  I'm also being taught about my center-of-gravity (in some ways, mentally as well as physical) and how to avoid being hit in the first place. It's really great!

On the sensei:
Alan's a great teacher. He LOVES this art and that passion is infectious - evident in every class, every technique, every step, every word. Plus he is really, really good at it - amazing what he can do.

Alan Friedman is a wonderful teacher who brings honesty, humor, and a lot of fun to the training experience. I’m inspired by how powerfully and gracefully he moves.  Alan tunes into his students’ differences in age, experience, and physical limitations, and masterfully adjusts the training to fit each of us, at the same time supporting us in transcending mental barriers and limiting beliefs about what we’re really capable of achieving in this art.

On the training:
The progression of techniques through the different levels (belts) has been beautifully designed, gently moving into greater levels of complexity and physical challenge. The training alternates between working in a studio, and training in a local park. This unique combination of indoor/outdoor training gives me the opportunity to take the art “out into the world”, with all of its distractions and unpredictability – and an abundance of fresh air. What a great way to train!

Sensei sets a tone and "culture" for the class that is awesome. Everyone is really into it, trying their best, and being very supportive of each other. You also get so much personal attention that it feels like a private class.

I began my journey two years ago.  In that time this art has provided me with a great deal of opportunity to grow physically and spiritually.  My journey is, like all students, unique to myself.  The preconceived notions that I held at the beginning of my journey have at times caused obstacles within my path and at other times have brought me great joy in the realization that I was wrong in my idea of my own limitations.

As a guide on my journey, Alan Sensei has been a great source of wisdom and inspiration.  Not only on the physical techniques but a great resource for the personal growth I have experienced.  At times of complete frustration he has been there to show me that the answers are there in the training.

His enthusiasm and love for this art is infectious. You see this in his approach to sharing his knowledge and expertise.  While the school is steeped in tradition, Alan Sensei creates an extremely fun atmosphere where every student is able to feel comfortable.  He is able to tailor the lessons so that each student, no matter what their level, walks away with a better understanding.  He pushes us physically and challenges each of us to look within ourselves and improve.  I leave each of his classes extremely exhausted but completely energized.

A smallish framed woman, non-aggressive by nature, and no previous training in any martial art, I began with the belief that I, because of my age and size, would not be able to perform the movements or techniques effectively.  Two years into this journey and my body has tightened and toned.  I am probably in the best shape of my life.  My strength and flexibility continue to improve.  I FEEL fantastic.  But here’s the best part.  At 110 pounds I have learned that with proper training, I can lay a 220 pound man flat on his back.  I don’t have to be big to protect myself!  Okay so not every day are we throwing the big guys but hey, I know that I can do it.  My self confidence has risen and I carry myself with greater respect.  It is my experience with this art and the encouragement received from Alan Sensei that has allowed me to find this self respect.
